There were three loud explosions in the heart of Kyiv, and the Ukrainian government later claimed they were caused by the destruction of Iranian-made Shahed drones.
Ten Shahed drones, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, were shot down by Ukraine's air defenses, and rescue workers were sent to the Shevchenkivskyi neighborhood in the city's center.
Details will follow, he said on his Telegram channel. Independent confirmation of Klitschko's assertion was not feasible.
Ukrainian politician Oleksiy Goncharenko tweeted that he had heard three blasts around 6:30 a.m. local time (04:30 GMT).
At 3:55 a.m. local time (5:55 a.m. GMT), the air-raid siren sounded, and everyone were told to stay in bomb shelters until they heard the all-clear.
According to Goncharenko, "Ukrainians wake up not from alarm clocks, but from explosions." I appreciate the help from our northern neighbor, Russia. Howdy, y'all!
Kyiv Oblast governor Oleksiy Kuleba reported that the region's air defense systems were "striking targets" after being activated.
The explosions happened as Ukraine begged its allies to supply it with more sophisticated air defense systems to help it shoot down Russian missiles and drones that have wreaked havoc on the country's energy infrastructure and left millions without heating throughout the very cold winter.
According to Zelenskyy, the capital city of Kiev and the Kyiv region, as well as four regions in western Ukraine and the Dnipropetrovsk region in the country's center, are all suffering "extremely severe" conditions with power supplies.
On Tuesday, news emerged that the United States was wrapping up preparations to ship the advanced Patriot air defense system to Ukraine.
