Inflation in Argentina is expected to hit 99 percent this month, and economists predict it could hit triple digits shortly, Bloomberg reported as the Argentine national team prepared for Sunday's World Cup final.
Inflation averaged 116% in 1986, the year Diego Maradona led the albiceleste to the World Cup triumph. According to polls and data from the central bank, the rate in 1978, when Argentina hosted the event and triumphed, was 176%.
Fans saw Lionel Messi, who was born the following year, as the natural successor to Diego Maradona's iconic position, and he will be making his final World Cup appearance in the match against France. The team's miraculous run to the final match, which saw them avoid early elimination and then win five games in a row, was inspired by their talisman, and it has thrilled a country that is now again facing difficult economic times.
However, this unchanging aspect of the country's economy does not predict the level of success the country will have in the World Cup. Due to hyperinflation of about 2,000% in 1990, the club ultimately lost the championship game. Even while the official rate was only 22% when it lost the 2014 final, many suspected government manipulation of data.
